The Great Debate!

I have said and written this many times before – you can podcast with a 10 Euro headset ( headphones fitted with a little side boom mic).

All the classroom PCs are supplied with headsets with an inline bead microphone.

The majority of times will involve the use of the headset for listening only.

Students can familiarise themselves with the equipment by using the Sound Recorder application in Window’s Accessories.

Audacity is free. It is installed on the 6th Class computers.

Alternatively, you can purchase a purpose built USB condenser mic for 10 times the price.

I have taken the less travelled path. I use audio gear already in use in the school.

This equipment is used for concerts, religious ceremonies and all events requiring amplification.

It is used for podcasting and recording in general when it is not in use elsewhere. It is a good model of maximum use of personnel, time and resources in a climate when everything is the subject of cutbacks. In fact, its permanent location and designated storage area is the podcast studio.

The mics are plugged into a stereo mixer which in turn is connected to a USB MIDI inerface which is connected to the computer running Audacity and WordPress. I could do with some studio foam tiles, base traps for the corners and general egg crate sytle sound absorbsion at head level for the walls.

There are now inline XLR to USB converters on the market. I had to purchase a commercial desktop USB MIDI interface to overcome that problem 4 years ago. The following are alternatives to the expensive FlashMic type of solution. The following solutions are not wireless add-ons. They do not provide onboard storage or software.

Shure are due to release their inline offering the Shure X2u XLR-to-USB Signal Adapter this coming April.

There are several more economical alternatives on the market as I type. The MicPort Pro has everything but again I say it is a pity they did not include a rechargeable cell and 2 – 4 GB storage in the larger more expensive offerings while they were at it.

Google “usb to phantom xlr converter” and see what it turns up.

My solution for recording in the field is to take along my tried and trusted Sony stereo condenser microphone and Olympus digital audio recorder.

The results are excellent! The Olympus plugs directly into the USB port and is recognised as a plug and play remote storage device. The only draw back with this old gear is that the file has to be converted from WAV to MP3.

Behringer have several USB and FireWire interfaces for sale at prices to suit all pockets.

If you are starting from scratch and you would like NBQ (near broadcast quality) results I would purchase a USB condeser microphone.

If the equipment is going to assume several roles in the school I would purchase XLR mics, a mixer and a USB interface.
