Google’s network of avartars and virtual rooms “Lively beta” wraps up at midnight to-night.

Google launched  launched “Lively beta” last July. It was to act as another medium for online personal expression through the construction and decoration of publicly accessible rooms.

I was a great idea but it fell victim to the sex industry and deviant minds from the start. I registered on day one and had a look around and found several adult themed rooms under construction. It was a pity. I dropped in again at the beginning of the month to find thousands of creations but the initial activity and enthusiasm seemed to have died off considerably. Maybe it proved to be more deadly than lively

The 4th Class girls in Saint Attracta’s S.N.S. were delighted to find that the Google Image search facility was available on the Schools’ Broadband service this morning. The usual cohort of puppies and ponies found their way into their DTP projects. The boys on the other hand did not even know the service had been suspended!

The NCTE Help Desk seemed to be unaware of the problem. But they have agreed to pass the Google Image Search problem over to HEAnet.

It would appear that images found by other search engines seem to be unaffected on the SBN. In fact if “dog pictures” is Googled it provides some images in the text [...]]]>

No warning! The Google Image Search facility has been blocked on the Schools’ Broadband Service.

It seems to have fallen foul of FortiNet filtering protocols. I doubt if it was a policy decision by the NCTE as many schools use Google Image Search everyday. There may have been a category filing software glitch which triggered the [...]]]>

It seems to have fallen foul of FortiNet filtering protocols. I doubt if it was a policy decision by the NCTE as many schools use Google Image Search everyday. There may have been a category filing software glitch which triggered the block. We may never know.

I will have to download what I think my class would like and put it on a USB stick.
