Time flies! eTwinning has entered the 6th year of its fruitful existence and its 5th anniversary is on the horizon.

I enjoyed the last 5 years and I am sure the students and teachers involved in their various projects experienced many enriching momnets and have gained insights into the cultural and pedagogical praxis of their eTwinning partners.

One of the sad facts about the progression from primary school to 2nd level, in Ireland at least,  is that many post-primary schools do not “eTwin” until Transition Year due to timetabling restraints or lack of staff. That situation can only worsen in the present climate of cut-backs and higher pupil-teacher ratios.

eTwinning is free and should not impact on the curriculum as the eTwinning project should be designed to enhamce the subject in question. It serves as a platform for the enhancement of real-time ICT skills and offers Modern foreign Language (MFL) students the opportunity to converse with their peers in their native tongue.

The new eTwinning Portal reflects the growth of the “partnership site” over the last 5 years.

In answer to some of your questions – I really don’t know what is in store for “Once Upn a Blog” for 2008! The slua.com site will continue as it is my own project site. The eTwinning project is a joint venture between myself and Jacqueline Vanhear in Malta. Jacqueline has a new class and other commitments whereas I find myself getting to grips with a new building which is experiencing a lot of ICT teething problems.

I will continue to post but for members only. Nothing will appear on the site.

Readers who have any ideas or who wish to become contibutors please feel free to contact me.

Please feel free to recommend new members to keep the site ticking over until the school network is more reliable.

If you can see this posting you were probably one of the lucky people who attended John Crowe’s excellent music technology course in Blackrock Education Centre last week. I have moved away from free services we discussed, such as Blogger, to maintain ownership of the site in order to exercise  control over its content and appearance. 

The children in my school came up with the username  “podmaster”. The webmaster looks after the website so logically the podmaster takes care of the podcasting side of things as far as they are concerned. I can assure that no mastery of the medium is implied in the name but I have been podcasting on and off for nearly two years. My gear consists of semi-professional, near broadcast quality (NBQ) equipment purchased new and secondhand both online and from retail suppliers. 

The site is hosted by LetsHost.ie and they have assured me of their cooperation though they do not support blogging directly.

This project may form the interactive component of my UL Graduate Diploma in Digital Media Development for Education.

P.S. My old usernames were “frankseph” and “joesoap” for the trackers among you. Slua.com is my own ”personal development” domain established in August 2002 – it keeps me intouch with the IT world.
