I came across this gem yesterday and it is bearing the DIT School of Media logo in the top right hand corner it is called CLiC NEWS – Computer Learnining in Communities. It seems to be a vehicle for the media students to practise their craft. Oviously it is pitched at the wider community and at a post-primary level from an media studies point of view. It is a pity it does not have a primary level content base as the post-primary sector seem to have enough resources already. having said that, the content is excellent, well written and easy to view and read. Registration is required to get past the teasers in order to read the full articles.

According to CLiC News and this is not an April Fool’s Day joke. We may have to make up for lost school days due to the lack of preparation for the recent snow falls on the part of local government authorities. Typical!

I downloaded a CLiC logo with the hopoe of linking the image but the image is not transparent without a bit of tinkering – I will get back to it later.

I was disappointed to read that there were 2 “no shows” at the recent Robots.ie Soldering Workshop held at The Science Gallery . I would have liked to have been there but besides my recent respiratory problems I had also read on the site two weeks beforehand that the workshop was sold out so I didn’t apply. You can follow them on Twitter @robots_ie for news of future event. The finished article looks impressive.

Irish eTwinning Winner

Congratulations to Tom Roche and the pupils and staff of Knockaclarig National School, Castleisland, Co. Kerry who were awarded first place in their category at the 4th Annual eTwinning Conference held in Prague this weekend (February 13 – 15th).

Their project is entitled “Make film and share IT with friends 2.0!”

Knockaclarig N.S eTwinned with Fredrik Olsson of Vindängen in Sweden.

eTwinning is part of the Life long Learning programme which is managed by Léargas.

I watched the tweets rolling in from Prague during the weekend.

Belfast eTwinning PDW

The eTwinning PDW in Belfast was a great success. I really enjoyed it.

I have posted the photographs on my school site www.sasns.ie with a link to the school’s Flickr account for one week only.

The entire photo set will be published on the http://slua.com site after Christmas so the thumbnails may not work in 2009.

I hope to post them here shortly if there are no objections.

The netbook I used was a Medion Akoya runing Windows XP Pro SP2 available on a regular basis from Aldi at €395 including a 3 year warranty. I generally use online remote storage and applications as aften as possible (cloud computing – the new buzz word). However, I regularly fall back on the 80 GB harddrive if broadband connectivity is not available. Fortunately, the Radisson came up trumps.

Dublin arrival of the Sea Stallion from Glendalough

This is a “no frills” video of the arrival of the replica Viking longboat the “Sea Stallion from Glendalough” at Dublin’s Custom’s House Quay on August 14th, 2007.

It was shot in the crush of the crowd but it does capture the atmosphere and excitement of the historic event.

Last night’sÂ Real Player version was a mess. Unfortunately, this a a very large file, nearly 120MB so only download if you have a decent broadband connection. This is an experiment in Apple Quicktime. Let me know if it isÂ better or worse than Windows Media Format.

Dublin welcomes the Sea Stallion from Glendalough

The Sea Stallion from Glendalough finally docked at Customs House Quay after its six week voyage from Roskilde in Denmark. The replica longboat travelled 1000 nautical miles manned (and womanned) by an international crew of 60. More pictures to follow tomorrow.

I can hear the song by The Clash in my head – "Should I stay or should I go . . " The bad weather is closing in on our proposed trip to Hook Head, County Wexford.

The Norman Invasion of Ireland began in 1169. Legend has it that that Richard de Clare (aka Strongbow), the Earl of Pembroke coined the phrase during the Norman assult on Waterford in August, 1170. He is supposed to have said that he would land his army in Ireland by Hook (Head) or by Crook (village). Hook (County Wexford) and Crooke (County Waterford) face each other across the Suir estuary. He actually landed in Passage where a beachhead had been secured by an earlier landing party. If the weather gets any worse I will be lucky if I can see the lighthouse through the mist.
