I have just finished reading eSchool News and the main article is about a new projector which will turn any wall into an interactive surface. Epson and Boxlight are pitching their “ potentially game-changing technology” at the education market. “ The development means schools no longer have to buy separate hardware to enjoy the benefits of IWBs, whose interactive surface and ability to engage students have made them quite popular in classrooms.”

It sounds like Epson and Boxlight have fine tuned a Mimo type application. It also reminds me of the butchered Wii offerings of 2008. I am sure many homemade look alikes will surface on YouTube.

The article goes on to mention that RM Education have been brought into the frame by Epson and there is a possibility that the RM Easiteach interactive whiteboard software may be bundled with the projectors or offerd at an additional cost.

It sounds very like a re-tweaked version of the Boxlight ProjectoWrite LCD Interactive Presentation Projector which featured on the CESI Dublin site in October 2008. Interesting!!

Whatever happens there is a new kid on the block. The question is whether we should hold back on the purchase of conventional projectors until an Irish price is announced.

It was a great experience. I am usually recording others or pasing on the tech tips associated with audio recording and podcasting.

I would like take this opportunity to express my gratittude to Pat Brennan of TeachNet for the invitation. I would also like to extend my thanks to Michael Hallisey, Clifford Brown and Simon Lewis for their participation in the podcast.

I hope I gave a taste of what podcasting can do for a school. Clifford delivered a comprehensive overview of Web 2.0 technologies in the educational arena. And Simon looked to the future and outlined the online digital prospects for his new school.

And in the true tradition of all good primary school teachers I awarded the podcast a rating of 5 stars as it ticked all the boxes.

Long may the TeachNet podcasts continue. Finally, a special thanks to the anonymous sound engineer who put the show together.

I have just finished reading the course assessments and I agree with the opinions expressed both on the forms and at the course on Friday. But it must be borne in mind that the portal was developed to meet the needs of the mid-naughties. The recent development of online broadband dependant applications has changed the landscape of social networking and has serious implications for eTwinning. So called “Web 2.0″ technologies are beginning to dominate the successful projects and will eventually cause a conceptual rethink and re-design of the eTwinning portal.

Of course this all contingent on the availability of a national broadband infrastructure. The national rollout of a decent broadband service to all schools is key to the sucess of realtime communication. Satelite broadband is fine as a stop-gap measure but totally unsuitable for communications’ projects with on “on the fly” componet which is bandwidth intensive..

The arrival of 3G telephony has heralded the emergence of a possible hybrid Web 3.0 stable of applications for the multimedia mobile user. One of the most elementry functions the device performs is to send and receive phonecalls. Barring the total collapse of world markets and the subsequent loss of venture capital to fund the research and development of enovative mobile solutions, we should witness the regular deployment of handheld systems in the classroom before the end of the decade. It may mean that the student is inadvertently providing the hardware himself through his mobile communications device.

The eTwinning portal will have to reflect these social and technological changes. The only blog available at the moment is a teachers’ blog and comments are seemingly not approved. They are not blocked or suspended just never approved. Strange!

I have to use the magnifying facility on Explorer 7 to view the Twinfinder. There again, I am in my fifties so maybe it is just me.

All things considered the eTwinning Portal could do with a face lift. It is “flat” as someone remarked. Having said that I cannot face into another year of ColdFusion error reports aand upload restrictions.
